New Things and New Brings

Hi, so much going on lately. I am working on some new necklaces in the Apache Teardrop style and the Arrow. So definitely more to come, plus hopefully some bright surprises. Also, I thought it was time to update the ol' website... Although it is still very much a work in progress for sure. I did manage to switch out a few photos to that were more currently taken.
I'm still not totally 100%, but I feel good about the change, so that's what it is for now I 'spose.

Also, V-day was fun. We had already been eating tons of cookies from C's grandma that we helped to frost. And for V-day C surprised our home with this greenhouse shelving unit. I know it's made o' plastic but I plan on taking great care of it and we are going to use the heck out of it. Very excited to get going on the plants this season, window style or sunporch... still haven't decided. So much going on lately with C's work, tomorrow I'll be helping him with the chili-cookoff they participate annually. Should be fun. I hope your week is going well so far.

And oh my, did I watch this movie recently and got hit with a ton of bricks. Something about this scene it flashes for a moment, and the quick shots of flower arrangements. But this scene where they place the beads on the statue of the child being held by the mother. It kinda slays me. I want to make a shrine like this maybe, I have a small area going on already but this seems to call to me for some reason. Oh well, we'll see.

So with that said my family and I went for a 3.5 hr ride to to visit the Effigy Mounds State Park.
We got lost on the way, a minor detour be we were committed and arrived at the trail and visitor center at dusk. By the time we reached the mountain-top the sun was setting. It was beautiful, I will not forget it or the town I swear I've dreamt of it a couple of years ago. I also had a dream when Enoch was just a baby (over 6 years ago) I had been to the mounds with C and E and just as in my dream the mounds were covered in leaves but that did not hide their magic.

and the awesome high chair at the hall where the wedding was held. This chair has probably been there since C was in high school! Festive enough for the 2012... Yes!!!

Happy Holidays! Today little-man E has his last day of school and his Christmas Break begins, I will be taking some time off of the ol' blog and possibly the tumblr too. Till next week then! In the meantime I posted some photos of these new watermelon radishes that C got in. So good, then I wanted to make something to go with the radish so I made some corn tortillas. My grandma always had fresh cut radishes on her plate and a mini-salad to go with her traditional mexican meal. We've been using the Advent Calender's full of chocolates to keep track of time it's a treat for the kids (one of these day's I'll get around to making of my own)... E had a Christmas Party at school for the parents to come to and we brought home his handmade pointsetta, I love poinsettas, in East L.A. sometimes I'd see them growing in peoples front yard next to huge aloes looking rather big and regal themselves so I broke down and got one. Hoping to bring a little of the familiar to the unfamiliar. We went to Clark's Tree Farm to get our tree about a week ago, I forgot to bring my camera though, we went there last year too. It's always fun to cut and pick your own tree. I still have to sew stockings in time for Christmas, we're trying new ones this year... In a little while, I'll be heading over to C's grandma's house to pick up more frosted sugar cookies some of which Iris and I helped frost. Anyhow, Season's Greetings (Winter Solstice is tomorrow)!

Lots of things being done around the house lately. C recovered and assembled an office chair we picked up at his old junior high school when they had an auction, along with recovering a mini chair for Iris. I've been painting some more things but I think I will post them after the holidays. :)

I hope all is going well out there. I just learned/ confirmed that one of my dearest friends is going to be a daddy! So stoked for him as he is one magical brother.

I have been watching this unassuming movie lately instead of television and the last photo located at bottom is of a kindergarden pottery project in which a teacher decided to use Clarice Cliff as inspiration for the children.

So we've been getting snow big time! And I am also adding things to my etsy shop as of yesterday and for the rest of the week. Please feel free to stop over there and take a peep... :) I'm in the process of adding a couple surprises by the end of the week so stay tuned!

It's really starting to feel like Christmas time! This morning something very interesting happened, I was exploring the Call Park (our wooded state park) by car while my daughter was asleep in the backseat. I got out to take a few photos of the trees and snow and out of the horizon came a giant german shepard ducking out from his hiding spot. He was super playful, at first I didn't really know what was going on. Then I realized that he was the german shepard I always spied sitting in the driveway across the street from the State Park during the summer time. Once I was in the car when he kinda kept running circles around it. I drived forward and he'd follow and I drived back and he'd follow. I didn't want him to get run over!!! So after a bunch of what seemed like back and forth with the dog running next to my car and myself trying to figure out what to do I decided to head over to his house. No one was home. I sat in my car and he sat next to the my car still outside but looking very calm. Suddenly his owner shows up at the end of the driveway and he thanks me for waiting with his dog who accidentally got out. I knew his dog was trying to tell me something!!! It seemed so out of context with the way my day was going, waking up late, setting up an etsy shop for the first time not really knowing what I am doing or if anyone will buy anything, dealing with my very energetic Iris and sending Enoch off to school. Then this dog comes out of nowhere and I am forced to be totally aware of something bigger than myself. He followed me for two blocks and ran in front of my car at one point... It was a small thing in a way. But it reminded me of the time I went up to the Los Angeles National forest with my cousin in the pitch black of night. Burning sage and listening to old punk songs and feeling like we were looking for a bit of respite. Then it happened, out of nowhere a female doe appeared right next to our car door, I stopped she stopped I drove and she ran with us for a good while. It felt like the best sign ever. I like when things happen by chance and yet they subtly pause to reveal a larger message. Something like 'you are not alone' maybe.

Anyhow, I also included a photo of an awesome drawing I received yesterday from Argentina. Daniela and I are doing a drawing share. I've sent off a couple drawings to her and she'll add to them and I have the honor of adding to her very lovely work. + sp. note (i'm trying to figure out how to touch her beautiful painting w/ out changing it's loveliness!) (i will post a photo of the painting i sent to her soon)

chris made some kale chips and they were tasty. i picked up a brown ceramic vase at exceptional treasures. eating away at some homemade garlic infused goat cheese given to us by a wonderful lady ( maggie b you make a delicious pumpkin pie and your cheese is so swell). been reading Juliette de Bairacli Levy's book common herbs for natural health. we are still working on an apple pie pictured above from c's aunt becky, tastes very yummy warmed. and also been drinking of peony and juniper tea (this one batch pictured above also has passionflower tea in it for further relaxing qualities:]). peony has medicinal properties that i am finding very handy lately apparently the root carries the most properties but the leaves are what i have so i'm using them. it's a mild narcotic [not that i need that or anything;)] and antispasmodic. nothing crazy. the juniper is a toner of the insides, super good anti-fungal/ balancer and it sorta peps me up for winter with it's very strong aroma. c made the bestest soup ever with barley and kidney beans/ kale. he recieved tons of it at his work so it's been put to good use. lots to do today house is in chaos with the messes and what not. time to clean and play catchup on some projects.

ivan-ivanov 'seasons' animated by yuri norstein. this video always gets me come winter! i've probably posted it more than a few times. if i have apologies! it just has such a delicate magical tone to it.

lately the frost has been covering the grass and refracts tiny rainbow prisms inside each glob of ice crystal. i'm happy to see the sight, but also feeling a little unprepared for winter. often times, we drive around for a while after we drop c off at work. little iris and myself roaming the countryside. so far we've seen a mama doe and her family running in the woods, healthy and unphased by the weather. it's also fun to spy a bunch of woodpeckers in the forest near the road. one has already happened to be right in front of the car on the street as i was heading down a hill.

I decided to post some photos of the sign that I made for Fresh Connections Co-op Market here in town. It's so nice to have it done. I hope the stores customers and whatnot will be able to enjoy it here and there... Also, Thanksgiving... it was pretty good. I hope yours went swimmingly as well! We made our 'seitan turkey' just as we did the year before, and came home with an apple pie and pumpkin muffins. It turned out pretty darn nice, hanging out with C's family and enjoying good laughs and yummy mashed potatoes and the like. Our cat is as silly as ever. It's crazy. Here is some work that I'm tying up loose ends on, pictured above. Hoping to accomplish a few goals this weekend...

I was up till about 4 something last night. I finished the sign for the local co-op natural foods market!

Yay! I'm a bit of a zombie, but for now I give you Bendik Riis' paintings and candle compulsions.

Perhaps I can do something with this obsession. I've made candles before but we have no beeswax right now. Would it be strange to do sculptural candles? I wonder.

The fun is in the lighting of them. But also the energy they harness before.

The potential of the candle to help foster things or wishes that come from the imagination. Manifestation.

When C went into a gas station in town that serves tacos to get and went in pay for some sodas. He discovered there is a soap made for that special day when you have a...

and

I got the chance to teach the Mexican cooking class at the local food co-op this past Saturday. Everyone did so well. I gave a lesson in tortilla making, flour and corn. Even though it was their first time making tortillas lots of them had perfect circular tortillas that were very even and smooth. They taught me much! We also got to introduce them to one of my favorite dishes Chilaquiles. So good!

Apparently the masa harina (corn flour used for cooking corn tortillas and tamales) really is made with air slacked mineral lime, it's a process called nixtamalization! I always thought it was lime juice dehydrated to preserve the integrity of the flour. What a dope! Anyway, the lime juice from the fruit is or can be added while making the dough for the corn tortilla however! The result is quite tasty... My students were so attentive and very generous! So lucky to have met them.

Corn Tortillas:

Ingredients

1 3/4 cups masa harina
1 1/8 cups water
2 tblspns oil (optional)
1 tblspn lime fruit juice (optional)
This recipe makes around 15 tortillas.
Directions

In a medium bowl, mix together masa harina and hot water until thoroughly combined. Turn dough onto a clean surface and knead until pliable and smooth. If dough is too sticky, add more masa harina; if it begins to dry out, sprinkle with water. Cover dough tightly with plastic wrap and allow to stand for 30 minutes.
Preheat a cast iron skillet or griddle to medium-high.
Divide dough into 15 equal-size balls. Using a tortilla press, a rolling pin, or your hands, press each ball of dough flat between two sheets of plastic wrap.
Immediately place tortilla in preheated pan and allow to cook for approximately 30 seconds, or until browned and slightly puffy. Turn tortilla over to brown on second side for approximately 30 seconds more, then transfer to a plate. Repeat process with each ball of dough. Keep tortillas covered with a towel to stay warm and moist until ready to serve.

The following photos beginning with the bunny face photo (above) are things I made for a trade a while ago. I sure hope she liked them. :) Anyhow, I used terra cotta fimo for the rabbit head and hand-painted it and gave it a good coat of glaze.

The back (above photo). I used vintage hand-painted around the late 50s? wall paper to cover the back of the frame. The wallpaper is awesome. I purchased it from an very nice old man at his yardsale on Alberta Street in Portland, OR at this moderately sized tan stucco faced house.

Hi! So here are some of the things we've been doing as of late. Toppest photo is the cat tower C made for Pumpkin. He used white elm for the wood and debarked it and sanded it down, then we took lime bath mats and tacked them on. We still have to cover the trunk of the tower with sisal rope so she can scratch. Then we made fresh yellow heirloom salsa and tomato sauce from the tomatoes we were given. The salsa was gone before we had a chance to can it. And that'll likely be the case for the tomato sauce as well. I roasted some pumpkin seeds from our carved pumpkins, E did most of the face drawing for the jack-o-lanterns and while the seeds are pretty good they could use a second roasting. Oops, next time I suppose. C made bagels and I helped out with the boiling and coating with the toppings. They taste pretty yummy. It's not nearly as hard to make bagels as I thought it would be, but it was just as with anything... Making the time for it.

Time seems to be of the essence more than anything these days. I thought perhaps things had begun to slow with Winter approaching, but such is not the case. Now to focus on creating a balance of work and energy for those very precious loved ones. I've been tapped to paint a few signs for outside of the local natural foods co-op that my husband works for. For some reason, it got put on the backburner by none other than myself so I have to rein it in. I've been on this blog with mainly my image posts reigning. But I promise I'm still here.

Halloween was celebrated on Monday by the town so the kids cavorted around long enough to get tired and pick up some treats. E had spent most of his day in class at school so it was awesome to be hanging out with their cousins and visiting the G ma's. Traipsing around the neighborhoods. Ready for a quiet day now. Autumn is so beautiful around these parts though!

Gearing up for Halloween fun!!! We have been running around like crazy, many things to do before the Winter begins. Things are beginning to finally slow down... We went to our local Scuffham's Gardens which is an awesome generational farm located here in Algona. Our family hiked around the woods at Call Park and made our own paths to get around since the leaves covered everything, following creekbeds. C also made a cat tower with white elm wood supports and lime green carpet. C and myself made salsa with yellow heirlooms and the remaining tomatoes were used to make tomato sauce. Photos soon.

In other news many things are happening right now that seem almost hyper real. As if I am in suspension. But I can only do my best to push through. With that said I bid welcome to Hallow's Eve wholeheartedly! Here are some awesome horror film trailers of oldies but goodies.

We have been so lucky to be getting tons of free garden goodies from C's Aunt Nancy and C's Mom! Then the other day a rad lady who C works with dropped off that box of veggies from her garden and two Mammoth Sunflower heads that had gone to seed. Our garden is pretty much done since last week and we've been delighting in our pickled jalapenos and what not but now we have many tomatoes to make canned salsa or tomato sauce? So thankful! Time to can again.

Also, this has been going on...

My studio is darn near done in the third room of our apartment. I just have to put my fabric shelf in. So happy, thanks C for helping! And thanks to C's mom for watching little Iris while I put the room together! Pumpkin patch post next week...

Been so busy lately! We got a new kitty on Tuesday afternoon! Her name is Pumpkin, in honor of Halloween. Also I've included photos of things we purchased at an auction on Saturday. It was held at C's old junior high, an ancient old brick building with tons of character that is now defunct as of this year. It was pretty crazy to be standing bidding on well worn objects in the same rooms that C was when he was takings classes as a feisty young teenager (I had brought my camera but the batteries were dead). Awesome to be in the artroom where he would make things, I bid on that portable small easel (pictured a few photos up) and aquired the chisel set. We also picked up this tiny black wire chair (above) for Iris. It looks like it was a class project for welding. And at the very top are two new paintings I made on Monday 'Time Eternal' and 'Round Fields'. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

it's crazy to say goodbye to summer, i turned 33 in august and 2011 seems to be wrapping up but this fall i'm looking forward to baking and halloween with the fam. there are new projects on the horizon too... yesterday was as hot as the blazes and i'm still a little sick but it's almost gone. today is super gusty and the leaves are turning! i've been working on things but i don't really want to post photos till they're completed. we'll see. in other news our home just received two huge potted plants thanks to aunt nancy! she has an amazing piece of land out in the country and she's gots some awesome cats and dogs. she and her family are pretty rad. she gave us a giant jade plant and a huge arrangement of various succulents in one pot. thanks! the week before c brought home a Dieffenbachia house plant and two african violets. love them.
